Getting Started with Reptile Keeping in the UAE
Reptiles make fascinating, low-maintenance pets — and the UAE's warm climate makes it one of the best places in the world to keep them. Whether you're considering a bearded dragon, a leopard gecko, or a ball python, understanding the basics of reptile care will help your new pet thrive.
Choosing the Right Enclosure
Every reptile needs an enclosure that mimics its natural habitat. Here's a quick guide:
- Bearded Dragons — Need a minimum 120cm x 60cm terrarium with a basking spot of 40–45°C and a cool side of 25–28°C.
- Leopard Geckos — Do well in a 60cm x 45cm enclosure. They are crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk) and need a warm hide at around 30°C.
- Ball Pythons — Require a secure, escape-proof enclosure. Adults need at least 120cm x 60cm. Keep ambient temperatures between 27–30°C with a warm side of 32°C.

Heating and Lighting
Reptiles are cold-blooded, meaning they rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature. Most reptiles need:
- A basking bulb or ceramic heat emitter to create a warm zone
- A UVB lamp — essential for diurnal (daytime-active) reptiles like bearded dragons and chameleons to absorb vitamin D3
- An under-tank heater or heat mat for ground-dwelling species
Always use a thermostat to prevent overheating. Browse our heating and lighting collection for trusted brands including Arcadia, Exo Terra, and Reptizite.
Feeding Your Reptile
Diet varies significantly between species:
- Bearded Dragons — Juveniles eat 70% live insects (crickets, Dubia roaches) and 30% vegetables. Adults flip to 70% vegetables and 30% insects.
- Leopard Geckos — Strictly insectivores. Feed gut-loaded crickets and mealworms dusted with calcium and D3 supplement.
- Ball Pythons — Eat frozen/thawed mice or rats. Never feed live prey, as it can injure your snake.
Always dust feeder insects with a calcium and vitamin supplement to prevent metabolic bone disease — one of the most common reptile health issues in captivity.
Humidity and Water
Many reptile health problems stem from incorrect humidity levels. Use a digital hygrometer to monitor moisture in the enclosure:
- Desert species (bearded dragons, leopard geckos): 30–40% humidity
- Tropical species (crested geckos, chameleons): 60–80% humidity
- Ball pythons: 60–80% humidity, especially during shedding
Always provide a fresh water dish. Mist tropical enclosures daily to maintain humidity and encourage drinking.
Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid
- Using a too-small enclosure — reptiles need space to thermoregulate properly
- Skipping UVB lighting for species that need it — leads to metabolic bone disease
- Handling too soon after bringing your reptile home — give it at least 2 weeks to settle in
- Overfeeding adults — obesity is a growing problem in captive reptiles
- Using substrate that can cause impaction — avoid loose sand for young reptiles
